When I moved to Silicon Valley I lived in my car for the first few months because rent was so expensive. Now that is outlawed. I honestly don't know if I would be able to get to Silicon Valley today. And I have a lot of advantages most people don't.

When I first started in the computer industry in 1981 I slept in my car from April till September of that year and I was working 10-14 hours a day.

Man, I remember early in my time in the Bay Area I spent 4 months living out of the back of my Prius rather than cut payroll. To heck with desk space at coworking space, there’s probably a business model in renting overnight parking to founders.

Fascinating story. Now I know where the motivation behind Lambda comes from. It sounds too good to be true -- to offer free CS courses to people until they get a job. But you have a heart for those people because you know what it's like to have almost nothing.
