Message I got a couple days ago: “Hey Austen, I have three companies wanting to interview me in New York; I arranged them so they’re back to back, I’m just trying to scrape the funds together to buy a flight and hotel...” People that are new to tech aren’t used to comped travel

I will say, companies that don't explicitly state that they will comp travel for interviews are the worst. Making the candidate take the initiative to request reimbursement is awkward for everyone. Glad it worked out for him in the end.

Yup and companies that try make it seem like they’ll “make an exception”, which is BS given that it’s part of the cost of hiring. A red flag for me.

I find it odd they’re not arranging the travel or explicitly offered to do so.

This really tells me that employers need to do a better job being upfront with comped travel. It shouldn't even be a question.

Why didn't the companies mention this explicitly?

If they are only comping it then it seems he does still need to buy the flight, and stress about it.

It would probably be necessary to suggest that they be upfront about their difficulties in arranging travel including obtaining funds but also figuring out logistics. The interested party is making no assumptions here. Encourage your graduates to ask for what they need.
