Just another of the 1,000 examples of things that unintentionally hold back underrepresented communities from the tech jobs they’re just as qualified for

There’s no malintent here, just one of the many assumptions that comes from hiring folks already embedded in the same social class

Did they comp his travel?
-
All three companies were willing to comp his travel, but none explicitly said that, they just assumed he would assume that was the case. So he stresses out for a week trying to scrape together funds to buy a flight he doesn’t actually need to buy.
-
I will say, companies that don't explicitly state that they will comp travel for interviews are the worst. Making the candidate take the initiative to request reimbursement is awkward for everyone. Glad it worked out for him in the end.
-
Yup and companies that try make it seem like they’ll “make an exception”, which is BS given that it’s part of the cost of hiring. A red flag for me.

Maybe “how tech interviews work” should be a part of CS education?
-
It is a part of ours. But not all companies comp travel
-
I’ve been in tech for over a decade and I’d only assume travel is comped for the biggest companies, anyone else and I’d expect it to be explicit
-
It should always be explicit, either way.
-
I've never in my life applied for a company in any field that comps travel. This is news to me.
-
It seems to be a cultural thing - in both the industry and location senses. That is part of the problem, if you aren't already in those cultures you don't know about it. Hence my statement that it should always be explicit.

Could you, theoretically, submit the same receipts to all companies? I believe the "right" thing to do is to have them all pay a third (if you believe/desire comped travel)...
-
it's a mistake to tell a prospective employer that you're interviewing other places and where. They'll assume, sure, but to volunteer that? Uph.
-
Eh I think it’s a good thing that they know yourenin high demand
-
Depends on how many other available candidates are on the market for them though :)

Also worth noting that most assume the candidate trivially has a payment method which works and wouldn't be materially inconvenienced by spotting the company $1~2k for an indefinite period that the company would estimate as 1~3 weeks (if they were asked to estimate).
-
Blizzard did something I liked here, they sent a prepaid Visa card for meals etc per diem (and paid for Hotel/fight directly)

Often even if they comp your travel it’s at the reimbursement stage - I had to borrow the money for flights when I was first interviewing for software engineer positions.
-
And it just adds more misery to recent immigrants who often may not have access to credit.
