In part: because the people who want to save a ton of money using it, also don't want to contribute anything to the codebase. But that's just a guess.

Slack is just so much better than anything else out there I don’t think you can come anywhere close

I'm pointing out that instead of contributing styles, you chose to make fun of it on Twitter. Then you follow up with a general observation that OS isn't as polished as commercial products. To my mind, you've perfectly explained the cause behind the observed effect.

And what’s your proposed solution? That if everyone spent a little more time writing open source the UX would improve? I don’t believe that to be true

Are you suggesting that open source software has an inherent side-effect of bad UX? I doubt it. The project simply doesn't have the resources to give UX as much time and effort as Slack does. If companies donated development time, it would.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m proposing. Open source is a wonderful hammer. Not every problem is a nail.

It's only a hammer if your perspective is that OS is a resource to take from, and not to give to. There is no physical limitation on UX work being donated to an OS project: you can make it a multi-tool or CHOOSE not to.

That’s not true at all; you’re making really bad assumptions. It’s a systemic problem that causes OSS to have a bad UX. Design by committee is inferior for a reason.

My only assumption is that you find it a lot easier to tweet generalized criticisms of complex systems, than filing pull-requests.

What you’re missing is that more pull requests won’t solve the problem

Well I guess we agree to disagree. I like what you're doing with lambda school very much fwiw, I wish someone would do similar with legal education :).
