Every middle class American should live like a native in a second or third world country for a while. A year or so of that and *everything* in the US feels like a luxury forever. If you’re reading this in the US chances are you’re in the international 1%. Be grateful.

Related: some of the happiest times of my life were when I was living on next to nothing in an eastern Ukrainian mining town, surrounded by great people.

Also go to other first world countries and ride public transit or pay a hospital bill to realize we are far from the best at everything...

I'm just grateful for what I have & fully embrace what I was born with. I refuse to feel guilty about it & instead do my best to run with it to in turn be a good person & find ways to ethically & responsibly give back to others.

Sadly, the ever shrinking middle class won’t have to move anywhere to get that experience, many already do.

Well said. Well said. Life is hard here. Basic things taken for granted are luxuries here: electricity, healthcare, roads, etc.

I totally agree, I’ve been to Haiti 3x and when I come back just using AC in my car feels like a massive luxury. It causes you to notice the little and big luxuries of a middle class life.

the terms "second world" and "third world" countries are outdated. old terminology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_World … - also several countries in these "second" or "third world" buckets are richer per capita vs the US.

That's the effect COLLEGE had for people of my generation. 1. Start college: higher freedom, lower standard of living. I Calc'd all my meal costs. Chilli was $.86 a meal . 2. Graduate: less freedom, higher standard of living. Today, graduating=step down in both. Sad.
