this is a great example of just doing the obvious thing but it's obvious to only a small number of people. Lambda's biz model is a Theilian secret observed in the wild
-
it's the best example bc Thiel even cites "education being broken" as being a bad example of a "controversial truth" -- everyone already knew that part. everyone knew it but finding a useful secret that dealt with it was still this hard
-
Thiel actually nailed education - both why it’s used and not used. It’s insurance. A degree is an implied promise that you’ll be employable, worth going into massive debt for. So what if you just eliminate the risk? Both of nonemployment and of school not working out.
-
So you provide a form of insurance and act as investor instead of paid service provider, you price at a point where it’s still cheap but you can have a semblance of portfolio theory, then you just let aligned incentives do the work.
-
Lambda School’s secret is that college exists for most people because they can’t afford the risk of doing anything else. Sadly many can’t afford the risk of going either.
