The ironic thing about the Facebook data mess is after they get regulated other advertising companies will need huge legal and compliance teams to deal with the new regulations. The regulations could actually build a nearly insurmountable moat for FB.

It's not possible to compete with FB as a social network. You have to do something else better first (messaging, news, voice apps etc), and then add the network.

I was thinking about this recently re: Snapchat. Only way to compete is with something Facebook can't copy, and I'm hard-pressed to imagine what would qualify

If they manage to stave off regulation then they'll eventually face competition. Nobody stays on top in tech for too long.

FB is not in "tech". Intel is, Oracle is, Microsoft, Apple even, but not Facebook. They use tech, but their asset is the social graph, which means their moat is human laziness. <- THE SINGLE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE COMMERCIAL WORLD.
