The ironic thing about the Facebook data mess is after they get regulated other advertising companies will need huge legal and compliance teams to deal with the new regulations. The regulations could actually build a nearly insurmountable moat for FB.

I'm all for regulation that keeps firms honest, but I suspect most of the 170,000 or so pages of regulation at the Federal level alone has more to do with cronyism than consumer safety.

It happens, but you introduce political risk. You have to donate to both sides e.g. Comcast. Not sure how FB employees would feel about large R donations/PACs.
