People talk about schools being a credentialing system. That's true, but talented people get hired without a degree all the time (I never graduated, never had a problem). IMO Universities exist primarily because humans are undisciplined and flail in the face of uncertainty

school and free college was meant as a literal competition with communist russia who went to space before us, so we valued doing smart things back then.,...i think not totally sure. but schoools are like just there no direction

I think you’re on to something here. Schools exist because they give people a structure for learning and provide a framework for discipline. Most people don’t know how to learn (see Make It Stick) or they don’t know where to begin or how to proceed.
