The shakeout is starting. "A University of Wisconsin campus pushes plan to drop 13 majors — including English, history and philosophy, adding programs with clear career pathways as a way to address declining enrollment and a multimillion-dollar deficit."https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2018/03/21/university-of-wisconsin-campus-pushes-plan-to-drop-13-majors-including-english-history-and-philosophy/?utm_term=.3d0d2f9a39a7 …

This is an outrageous development. The primary mission of a university should be to learn how live a life, not just how to make a living.

The classes aren't cancelled, just the major

My main problem is with the ”clear career pathways”. Not the mission of a research university like UofW. Somehow I don’t see Cambridge going this direction.

You should ask the students attending and see how many are planning on being employable afterwards. According to the sharply declining enrollment numbers in those majors, it's most students.

It's a philosophical issue (pun kinda intended): do we want universities to produce employable people or academics that move their respective fields forward? I'd like to think it's the latter.

If it's the latter then enrollment should literally be 1/10 what it is

I’m with you on that. We do need more career-focused programs like lambda, so universities can do what they’re supposed to (with way smaller classes).

I know tons and tons of successful people. I know 0 with a philosophy degree ( and probably close to 0 with a business degree!!)

There will be unreasonable backlash to this. This is a great move because students would study rigorous majors that make them employable while also having an option to study liberal arts. But sadly learning is not what students want. They want to have a “major”.

As a Classics major turned successful Dir. of Pricing Analytics, this saddens me, but the fact is many humanities programs are not good.

It's one campus in the UW system. If someone wants to major in Philosophy or English they have other options. This is absolutely a good move on the part of UW

Whoa. You can still take courses in history English and philosophy but only major in them? Makes sense. But if there are no majors in those fields who will turn around and teach those courses?
