Social media makes it easier to organize mobs.

Or easier to bring together minorities to cause action. Was Arab Spring a mob?

By definition yes. Not all mobs are bad - the edges of the bell curve are much more powerful. That can be great, too

The whole idea that one can easily define good and bad “mobs” is awkward at best. Women protesting to vote would almost certainly have qualified as a mob. Civil rights movement as well.

Are you arguing all mobs are good? That seems unlikely. So then it’s questioning ability to discern good vs bad. MLK led a mob, so did Hitler.

I am just saying the notion of “intolerant minorities” is also the root of most social change that is viewed as a positive. I am not very supportive of the idea that groups of unpopular minority opinions should be “muted” because in today’s context they are not viewed positively.

I don’t think anyone would disagree with that. It’s a double edged sword.

But on Twitter where you’re punished for stepping on toes it’s extraordinarily difficult to navigate

It was exactly like that in college talking about divesting from South Africa or in grad school debating LGBT civil rights. Online brings the problem of anonymity and ability for people to say things they would not say in person.

You’re arguing against a point no one has made. No one has said minority viewpoints are bad. The point is that when huge amounts of powerful minority groups listen to everything you say and punish you if/when they think you’re wrong it becomes not worth it to share your thoughts

In other words, the risk of being wrong or perceived as wrong is just too great
