I think they would if they felt confident that the student was committed to the completing your program and they believed that the funds were going directly to helping the student.

Why donate instead of sponsor? Example: A company wants access to highly qualified candidates. Helps pay tuition as part of hiring deals.

Yes, they would! People want kids to succeed. Go to the business community for mentors for students from lower income/working class backgrounds. Simple things like how to dress for an interview, how to answer questions clearly & directly, etc. can make a difference as well.
