I see so many broken car windows in San Francisco I’m tempted to just leave it unlocked. Maybe put a sign on it that says “There’s nothing in there to steal, just try the handle first.”

Not worth having a car here for that reason.

There are plenty of people who take that approach. It mostly works, but it's not perfect. Another tip is to empty your glove box and console and leave them open so the criminals can see there's nothing inside.

I used to leave my car unlocked when I lived in SF with only registration in glove box. Would now take out registration.

My unlocked car had a rear window bashed in SF. Didn't have the sign though. 😞

My sister's locked car was stolen though. Can't win. Just Uber.

SF petty crime is absolutely out of control. Combined with the massive inequality, it's not a recipe for long term success. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory …

I saw someone selling drugs in the open this morning on Polk Street. A city employee was casually watching it. The only hope for San Francisco is vigilante justice.

When I lived in the Mission, after 5+ break-ins I just put a sign on the passenger window that said "Please don't break the glass. Nothing of value inside." Never had another problem after that.

I left my car unlocked for the 4+ yrs I lived in SF. That my car was beatup probably helped in Windows staying intact :D
