For a long time I thought the University system was unassailable. Embedded in culture, government-backed financing, hiring expectations, etc. But the chinks in the armor are clearly there now. It’s a bubble that’s going to pop, just a matter of time.

Do tell! What are the chinks, and is this a slow deflation or a boom?

Slow deflation overall, but rapid collapse in some segments--my guess is small regional private colleges 1st. Public unis also vulnerable, but it's a different game. Chinks= basically, our concept of university education has evolved drastically.

You likely know better, but I believe "college" has come to mean not only education, but a 4yr way of life, w/ all the that entails. We've also created amazing opps to complement classroom teaching. It's a beautiful thing, but quite an investment!

I agree that small privates are the likely first casualty. College as a 4-year experience is powerful, and I would put big undergrad colleges last on the list. Graduate and adult ed are likely the places where disruption (or "creative destruction") will have impact.

The weak point in their armor is that they're dependent on government money (federal, and for the state schools, state). Once enough voters stop treating higher ed funding as an obviously good thing and start asking why it's paying for so much of so little value....

They've managed to bundle together a lot of things that have no necessary connection: practical vs. knowledge-expanding vs. useless majors; social scene vs. academic scene; gorgeous campuses (with badly-ventilated lecture rooms) vs. any sense of proportion.

High time we stopped subsidizing NCAA football and university boondoggles.
