How many people die each year in cars and DUIs? Im not hearing many people blaming the easy access to cars or calling for stricter regulation on who buys cars and who is allowed to drive

Think banning AR-15 is possible? Would voters go for it? There’s about 15 mil of those in households. I think banning peer to peer sales, yearly renewals of licenses & streamline mental illness database would go a long way.
-
I don’t think you’ll ever be able to take away guns that are already on the market. You’ll get some volunteers, but some just won’t give them up.
-
Yup exactly. So banning them is likely politically not possible because of the gun owner voters and not the NRA as media loves to say. The fact that the Florida shooter could get guns shows the cracks in our system.
-
I heard it’s closer to about 18mil ... the lawmakers don’t need to be nervous. About half of those 18 Million are owned by like 5 guys in southern Oregon,

If you look at the data, career criminals don't burst into school rooms and gun down children, or gun down revellers at a disco etc etc.
-
What are the data between number of people killed in mass shootings compared to homicides in Chicago. 2017, what are the numbers?
-
Gun control regs wouldn’t solve Chicago
-
Deregulating guns would. Every grandma ought to have one in Chicago.
-
if you want to familiarize yourself with the depth of the problem in Chicago, you should meet some of the kids terrorized by local violence:https://www.thisamericanlife.org/487/harper-high-school-part-one …
-
Give the law abiding citizens guns, it will end very quickly.
-
If by "end very quickly" you mean the existence of humanity altogether in Chicago, then you're absolutely right. Again...go meet the victims.https://www.thisamericanlife.org/487/harper-high-school-part-one …

Agree. Licensure with renewal (and possibly insurance) requirements for different weapon classes should be a no brainer. Horse-trade this for more de-regulation (eg nothing banned, just class restrictions). Would be quasi-palatable and wildly successful.

Even if you could go full Australia in the US, I think the US would still have a similar number of incidents yet with less people killed.
-
Canada has a scheme closer to Australia. Toronto still has gang violence and gun murders. There was still an attack on parliament in 2014.
-
(yet their murder rate is still more than 3x lower than the US.)
-
Right. But we have less socioeconomic inequality than the US. The attacker on Parliament shouldn't have been able to get a rifle *anyways* but the one he did use was a lever action rather than semiauto.
-
totally. i don't believe that gun laws are the ONLY thing required to fix this problem. but this data shows that violent crime in toronto is high, but murder low. likely a byproduct of gun laws.https://globalnews.ca/news/267663/crime-rates-in-the-largest-u-s-cities-how-does-toronto-compare/ …
-
I mention Toronto because I grew up there. I mention the attack on Parliament because I was studying in Ottawa when it happened.
-
Like any other city, if you avoid the bad neighborhoods in Toronto, you'll be fine. Even if you walk through the bad neighborhoods, you're not likely to be targeted if you're not part of a gang.
-
yah, i wish that was the case for chicago :/ if you're interested, there's a great two-part this american life episode on a high school in Chicago where TWENTY-NINE students got shot in a year.https://www.thisamericanlife.org/487/harper-high-school-part-one …
