hard disagree. half of higher education having been turned into a leftist political inculcation scheme doesn't make ideal the other half being a spiritless materialist jobs training program
-
it's frustrating how many STEM/tech types are completely illiterate when it comes to history, art, culture etc. the ideal of the polymath is a good one and should be promoted
-
this is of course complicated by the fact that there are so many leftist commentators shouting "tech people need to learn about xyz subjects!!" which is...
-
...well understood as code for "submit to our belief system and do what we say"
-
Sure, I guess I just don’t view our education sustem as the only way that can/should happen
-
I agree with you on that on a personal level, being a notorious school-disliker myself
-
but in the general case I think that the majority do generally need to be told what to think, what has value to study, etc
-
I think there’s room to be taught *how* to think and not *what* to think, but agreed. I just don’t think that should be a requirement to start a career.

Reminds me of this, Selectivity of school matters for art degrees, but not STEM degreespic.twitter.com/jRaqCBqWRe

“You can tell if a discipline is BS if the degree depends severely on the prestige of the school granting it.” - Taleb in SITG.
-
Does that mean I need to actually read that book?

You do if you want to be able to quote it on Twitter :) This is a good summaryhttps://twitter.com/douglas9162/status/965904588846051328?s=21 …

I can hardly believe such a thing as anti STEM as a political strategy could ever be conceived.

Also idk how one can say that finance dems vote against their interest due to education & suggest resisting stem education for political reasons in the same argument
