Check out
@simple. I’m the CEO and happy to help! -
We're now recommending it to all of our students. Thank you for the product!

Our pleasure!

Accepting non-citizens anytime soon?
-
That's a really great question. I'm sorry to say at the moment we're not able to process applications for non-citizens. I know this can be really tough and I want to let you know that our team is committed to being able to offer accounts for non-citizens down the line. ^AB

Was coming here to recommend
@Simple. Nearly 5 year customer and couldn't be happier! For non citizens needing a place to direct deposit, try@greendotcards.

What town or city?
-
A few spots; students are spread across the US. Mostly rural.
-
Check with local banks and co-ops which tend to have far better fee/minimum policies than the national chains (they need to in order to compete). Not Tech services (apps, websites, QBO integration) may suffer, though.

Credit unions often have lower minimum and starting balances. Interesting problem - I just realized we don't issue paychecks. We must to direct deposit at my workplace.
-
Great that this is helping create good jobs for people in rural areas!

When I moved, Bank of America was the only bank that let you open without a SSN, apparently because they were the one that ended up handling the finances of border-hopping workers in the early 2000s. That makes me think that they'd have a solution to this!
-
Look for terrorist banks in other words?
-
Or... illegal immigrant banks. I've been using BofA for a few years now, no minimums, tolerable fees AND you can most stuff purely online [great for rural]

https://providentcu.org/index.asp?i=checking … - $5 minimum deposit, totally free checking. You'll need $10, one $5 deposit for the checking account, and one for the (required) savings account.
-
Also, beware of fake friendly banks like Simple, which is just a front for a giant Spanish bank called BBVA. Or Ally, which is GE Capital. Those come with all the same fees and scams as the big bad banks.
-
Been using Simple for years, literally never once a fee. May have been bought by a big bank, but they don’t charge fees. I’ve saved thousands on overdrafts with them probably.
