Have been reading Empires of Light (about Edison, Tesla and Westinghouse). Hadn’t realized that electricity, just as so many inventions after it, was ridiculed as a “toy for the rich” that would never benefit lower classes.

Hey Austen, sorry to be a killjoy 😬, but electricity wasn’t an invention, it was a discovery...it was always here (e.g. 🌩)

Electricity was derided as a toy for the rich, as were many inventions that came after electricity. That doesn’t say that electricity was an invention.

Just admit you read something wrong, tried to lob bombs at some popular twitter account you don’t like, and now it’s too late for you to backtrack

It always amazes me it literally got _everywhere_. ISPs use the excuse today that's it's too expensive to run out to rural areas.

Same was true for early electricity distribution. Like ISPs, the for-profit firms didn’t want to go to rural areas... The solution was government backed electricity coops...https://www.electric.coop/our-organization/history/ …

Interesting in that the modern day equivalent of that is local municipalities making their own ISPs, similar to how they already provide utilities such as water. Instead it being actively lobbied against by the large ISPs.

Thats what happens with everything from educational innovation to material innovation. The rich monopolize it, then the masses #hack it, and then the wealth gets better distributed.... and we lift more people out of poverty. There is always attrition in process.
