Serious question. How does low skilled immigration help an advanced society like the US?
@davidfrum -
Being low skilled isn’t permanent

legal.... Immigrants. And end chain migration.
-
So make them all legal? Deal
-
those here with no criminal record can stay. Not vote. Becoming legal citizen requires more. Then build a wall and secure our border.

Less to do with thinking, more to do with feeling. And that feeling isn't centered on the economy.

It’s also factually and demonstrably false. If we’re talking about the economy, that’s easy.

I've never met a single person against immigrants, but know plenty who oppose porous borders and illegal immigration.

Ignorance, plain and simple.

That may be true in the US - you're separated from most of the rest the world by oceans, so you can only let in immigrants who are "sophisticated" enough to fill your pretty stringent visa requirements, all the associated paperwork, and afford the plane ticket and relocation.
-
Your "land borne" immigration (from Mexico) is mostly made of people from a broadly "western" background (christians, speaking a latinate language, acquainted with liberal democracy if not living in one).
-
The situation in Europe is completely different and much worse. "Our" immigrants are pretty much the least educated young men (those who couldn't find a job and marry in their home countries) from some of the most conservative and regressive societies on earth.
-
The result is an huge increase in crime and welfarerelated expenses - and an ever greater encroachment on secular values. The first victims are minorities themselves - jews, gays - as well as women, who now have to avoid some neighbourhoods entirely and dress more conservatively.
-
The cultural/immigration situation in Europe is literally the most depressing thing in the world right now.
-
Also note that the "beautiful people" (journalists, celebrities, academics, politicians, business people) who decide what is news, what is right and what is wrong, don't experience any of that, as they live in the most expensive (and whitest) neighbourhoods.

The weirdest thing from someone from outside looking at the US is how hard legal immigration is, even for high skill labour. Lottery system? C‘mon! Independent of political beliefs, surely it‘s better to at least regulate immigration by merit and not a lottery.

Canada gets it.
