I can’t see any way the American belief in an accredited degree being the most/only valuable type of education dies away. It’s too deeply ingrained in our psyche, whether or not it’s rational.

I've come to agree with this. Almost all examples of successful post-secondary ed outside the degree system are in tech, while the surprising scaling up - ASU, SNHU - is in degree-granting institutions.

Education and accreditation are different things. Perhaps over time more education will happen outside the organization which provides accreditation.

True, but more of a plateau, back to 2009 numbers, still astronomically high historically https://www.statista.com/statistics/183995/us-college-enrollment-and-projections-in-public-and-private-institutions/ …

With tuition going up, accredited schools may have hit the breaking point. My university is over $100k now for four years. With student loan interest, that's maybe $175k paid pack in total, over 30 years? Ugh.

Brand value / accreditation will always be a thing. Because it has real value. It just won’t always be a 4year uni

in some circles it already has died as a *social proof signal*. guessing you mean mainstream. maybe true. other signals are already stronger in some circles. eg. YC as a signal for investors.

So we undermine it at the recruitment phase. That requires tooling and practices which can successfully sift through candidates without regard to accreditation.

I'm so uncomfortable that you're not accredited, but I know I'm going to learn so much more from Lambda than I ever did at my 4-year school. I'm so excited!!!

I'd be interesting to see if anyone can change the structure of education before secondary school. Right now, curriculums are ingrained in the system from preschool on.

It'll take a really long time as the asset isn't tradable or well-measured, but it will happen. The feedback loop from the decreasing ROI of many degrees is delayed and clouded as a result.

It’s partly (mainly?) a CYA thing. “Here’s a piece of paper that the University Of X stamped to say they’re good. Must be true!” Experience and the school of hard knocks (or soft ones) is harder to verify.
