The point is to just not limit them in anyway. My daughter loves super heroes, science, playing in the dirt, AND sparkly pink, dolls, and kitties. GoldieBlox toys and sets are great for her.

I learned that you don’t control your children’s preferences
My big mistake was thinking that the two are in opposition. Princesses can use microscopes. Scientists can attend fancy dancing balls.
This same revelation is useful for culture. You can have many distinct cultural characteristics in the same person. And arguably that is precisely what people need to become less tribalistic.
Hey, I was into Belle and barbie dolls, and I love what I do today. Femininity is great!
My older daughter did princesses, then dropped them. My younger never particulatly cared. For both I created “Cupcakes and Code” to bring coding and tech into their world. I find they need to view tech as tools to fuel their creativity and vision, like paint + markers.
Persistence pays off. This Xmas my daughter’s favorite presents were a robot tiger, diamond earrings AND the microscope + petri dishes. We’re growing all our saliva bacteria to see who is the nastiest.
Me to my daughter, now 21: I called you princess all the time when you were little and I feel bad about it now.
Her: you still do it.
Here she is

Same here. Now covered in glitter, always.
Me, 18 months ago. “Screen time for my kid will be severely limited. And none of those bullshit kid shows.” Me, today. “Oh, thank god, he likes LEGO movies, I can finally rest for an afternoon.”
Caterpillars
have nothing on belle
Disney’s power is unstoppable.
Me, 3 years ago: [Same as Austen] 2.5 yo today: “My favorite colors are pink and purple.”
When did the princesses start? Is she your only? My 1y girl has an older brother so most of her toys are boy toys (b/c I'm cheap and hate clutter). She did go absolutely nuts over a doll he totally ignored - pretends to feed it, etc. Likes stuffed animals, too.
wow. My almost 3yo son is already deep into cars, and I was already preparing the bike and roller skates or anything for that matter.
