I think they're acquired with a potential ceiling of "next big thing" and a floor of "great team, product ideas, tech". If the product isn't working, then dont let those other 3 things go to waste.

Only 30% of acquisitions work out. I often see this. Company buys hot technology X. They don’t know how to monetize or grow it. They shut it down and it becomes open source. This is how open source is funded.

Maybe because they want the tech or intellectual property behind the company. In this case is even stranger: Shazam is not as "hot" as it was some years ago and Siri has its own music recognition system...
