Can someone explain this to me? Big 20 tech co acquires beloved niche app for $200-400m. Niche app dies six months later, nothing else changes. Is it just an extraordinarily expensive acquihire?

I think they're acquired with a potential ceiling of "next big thing" and a floor of "great team, product ideas, tech". If the product isn't working, then dont let those other 3 things go to waste.

Only 30% of acquisitions work out. I often see this. Company buys hot technology X. They don’t know how to monetize or grow it. They shut it down and it becomes open source. This is how open source is funded.

Shazam? Map out cost vs time to market for that kind of audio detection software. Think AR/VR safety IRL. At the pay grade of a team of big 20 software engineers, $200-400m is cheaper than reinventing the wheel.

Only about 1 in 15 start-ups “make it”. About 2 in 3 acquisitions “make it”. Failure is a result of not trying at all, these folks try. The choice is obvious: try!

Maybe because they want the tech or intellectual property behind the company. In this case is even stranger: Shazam is not as "hot" as it was some years ago and Siri has its own music recognition system... 🤔 For me it's an expensive buy 🤷‍♂️
