Would you rather have a Princeton diploma without a Princeton education, or a Princeton education without a Princeton diploma?

Problem is that this society/world cares too much about that diploma (from top tier universities) & doesn’t give a damn about their education or smaller university!

Unpopular opinion: I think alumni network is one of the main “perks” of attending Ivy Leagues. In a utopian society - everything would be merit based but in reality, how a society functions is very relationship driven.

The diploma, and it's not even close. Everything you can learn at Princeton you can learn on the internet, for free. But it's harder to signal that you've learned it.

There are few signals that the job market respects as much an Ivy League degree. But this of course depends on what you do and who you are. If you are a software engineer, for example, there are more objective ways to measure what you know, than say an English major.

And the who you are question is important as well. Not everyone can avail themselves of Alumni networks or mentoring as easily as others. This is oftentimes a question of class but also race and gender. The signal matters more for some people than others.

As a Princeton grad, hard to untangle. Name brand helped early career especially, but learning how to learn and learning how to navigate elite networks was potentially more important.

I voted for the education explicitly because of the network. Very similar feelings towards my alma mater, Notre Dame. Network > brand.

does the education come with the normal networking opportunities? b/c that's the primary value of going to Princeton
