It is remarkable that we cannot harness such a large % of global pop to generate more than a few hundred dollars of GDP per person /yr from the greatest computers we are aware of plus free will… Platform for empowering people to use comparative advantage of brain for… ?

We’re getting there, slowly but surely

I often think about the internet becoming one day the lever that eclipses synthesizing fertilizers, GMO seeds and developing vaccines and antibiotics for saving the most lives and improving health outcomes. Seems to be on track for this.

According to this graph, you could have said the same thing as tens of millions of people were killing and dying in World War II
-
You’ll notice the graph levels off there more than at other times, though it’s true that no single measure includes all aspects of all data
-
...which you would only see in retrospect. Or pick others: Vietnam, Cold War, segregation. Complacency (“calm down, everything is actually great!”) is the enemy of the continuation of the slope of this graph.

I love things like this. I almost feel like this perspective is deliberately dismissed by the cynical and miserable because it is too threatening and inconvenient to the pity party.

So 850 mill in extreme powerty (85%) in 1800 (1 billion population), and about 1350 mill or so (24%) around 1995 (5.5 billion pop). So, more live in extreme powerty. Statistics.. :)

Good point. Worth noting 9.6% 7 billion = 672 million, lower in absolute basis as well

A massive overflow of resources at the top means a couple more bread crumbs at the bottom. Has nothing to do with direct intent to fix problem, will never get significantly better under current system/circumstances. Coupl good ppl can only help with symptoms.

Well when $60 a month and lower is all the graph looks at, it is blatantly ignoring most poverty.

How would the graph look considering inflation? 1 USD now is not the same as 1 USD 100 years ago
-
Says it figures in inflation and PPP.
-
You are right, that is what it says. Thanks!

I think using population numbers instead of relative numbers might be a more human way to really measure this
