IMO it wasn’t just the India thing. @pmarca saw that there’s no upside and potentially unlimited downside to being a political contrarian in Silicon Valley, which is damn near ironic

I’m talking about Thiel as an avatar if this — he gets more money, more power, more access, and you think rational people say “I’m afraid that fate will befall me!”?
-
The only way you can remotely assert Thiel paid a price is if you think either no rich person should ever have to hear critique, or if a billionaire possibly gaining wealth at a slightly slower rate is “paying a price”.
-
Not to be pedantic, but gaining wealth at a lower rate is, by definition, paying a price. It’s just a price you don’t consider because he’s rich and who cares what happens to rich people
-
But it is important in this instance because it’s a price Thiel can afford to pay and a price that others cannot. So yes silencing those you disagree with can be dangerous, and not just for rich people
-
And of course there are worse things happening in the world. But that doesn’t make that kind of culture a good thing.
