IMO it wasn’t just the India thing. @pmarca saw that there’s no upside and potentially unlimited downside to being a political contrarian in Silicon Valley, which is damn near ironic

Can you describe “downside” here? Is there any circumstance where he’s not still immensely powerfully politically, economically, and culturally?

I remember when people started boycotting Dropbox in an effort to remove Condoleezza Rice from the board because of her position on the Iraq war. Eich was fired for supporting Prop 8. The perspective of “well he’d still be powerful” doesn’t matter

The backlash against Thiel at Y Combinator didn’t just affect Thiel. When I was in YC I talked to several people terrified of even implying political dissent, especially ahead of raising money. Skewering rich people can’t be OK just because they’re still rich.

You genuinely think Thiel was criticized for being rich?

If Thiel has paid a price for his beliefs, what is it? How has his economic, political or cultural power declined since he began destroying media outlets or supporting a president who’s called for the State execution of innocent American kids?

OK I hate to do this because, again, I despise Trump, but for the sake of discussion what would happen if partners were removed from YC for supporting Obama because he killed innocent Syrians in drone strikes?

That would be fine? Holding people accountable is good. Telling them when they support something immoral is good.

If you don’t know the difference between individuals holding powerful people accountable for their political acts & the government persecuting individuals for their beliefs, you’re a dumb person.

Speaking truth to power - even business power - is desirable. American. Esp when it's re morals/ethics/compliance. Being punished for speaking on either side of that is not (unless there are rules/market reasons for keeping silent/staying out of fray).
