I would be surprised if Tesla weren't worth over $300B in 10 years.

not about profitability. it's about overpromising and underdelivering. Amazon has consistently done the opposite.
-
Amazon hasn't promised anything, they just deliver. Tesla promises 100% impossible and gets 90% of the way there
-
Amazon definitely makes promises. They try pretty audacious stuff, it's not as hyped. Kiva Robotics in the factories. Amazon stores. Same day delivery. Drone delivery. Not to mention the original content push.
-
but to your original point, Amazon's financial approach and Tesla's couldn't be more different.
-
Their financial approaches are almost identical, just in different markets. 10 years ago people were saying the same things people are saying about Tesla today.
-
IIRC Amazon has always reinvested earnings to build out new offerings and invest in infrastructure. Tesla is taking future product pre-orders to fund previous product pre-orders which haven't been fulfilled. Different.
-
One is taking out a loan to build out revenue streams which is used to get more loans and it loops. One is taking out loans to fulfil loans.

Amazon didn't need to borrow every six months to stay in business.
-
Because Amazon wasn't in a capital intensive business. If it were building cars it absolutely would have.
-
But that difference makes Tesla beholden to debt & equity markets, which is a real risk to their biz. The next 24 months should be make or break for them.

Have made exact comparison last 48hours, indeed. Does anyone remember how long Bezos’ Amazon wasn’t profitable? People are funny.

If I were oil companies.. I would spend a lot of money to use social media to try and bury tesla with negative press
-
Which is exactly what they are doing. When GM recalls millions of vehicles after dozens of people die using their cars its barely a footnote. When Tesla has an insignificant parking break recall it’s huge news for a month

What would be scary is if Tesla figured out a partnership with other car manufacturers to provide their superchargers and create charging as a service.

Amazon keeps huge amounts of cash reserves
-
if the stock market throws a temper tantrum Amazon can live off its cash pile while it waits for revenue to pick up but tesla can't
