Hey nerds: Ending net neutrality is not the end of the world. It could be good or bad, but it def isn't catastrophichttps://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/7dljcy/serious_what_can_the_average_joe_do_to_save_net/ …

Net neutrality is a prediction made in the early 2000s that on the internet, consolidation would happen at the ISP level. The internet would be sold like cable.

It turned out that most of the consolidation happened at the level of individual websites. FB, Twitter etc now have the censorship power people worries about.

I find this whole debate interesting bc the fear of consolidation is so totally misplaced. All the bad things we feared would happen to the internet in 2005 to already happened.

In 2005 we were terrified that mobs of normies would show up, demanding the internet to be made family friendly. Terrified we'd only visit 1 or 2 corporate-controlled sites. Yet here we are.

Net neutrality I think is a misplaced crusade. Reviving the internet will take: blockchain protocols, a new platform (AR), and a general cultural revival.

But that's not to understate the effect the internet *did* have on the broader culture. We won, if this is what winning feels like.

I think the risk of ISPs with monopolies in localities segmenting up the Internet like it's cable TV is still real. No reason not to charge 2x for Netflix.

No, I agree. Don't necessarily think that's *so* wrong though, in terms of destroying internet culture. Much of the homogenization of web culture has been self-inflicted.

I guess it depends on what you're protecting. Most pro-NN redditors just want to watch rick and morty and play video games without getting charged more
