Still wrapping my mind around Prop C in SF. Not sure why a tax on gross receipts would make any sense at all https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/San-Francisco-s-business-taxes-are-a-confusing-13331125.php …pic.twitter.com/BtyIpHuQdo

Why don’t we discuss literally all of the other tax restrictions that voters *themselves* have embedded into the state Constitution over the last 40 years, making it exceedingly difficult to pass anything except for things that affect a hyper-narrow part of the tax base?!

That this passed is really an indictment around the vacuum of leadership in SF. I don't blame people who voted for it (even though tax mechanism is dumb): pro-prop-c voices were the only ones actually proposing a big solution with urgency.

Every few months at the @ASI used to get cranks sending me 'tax simplification plans'. Every time they advocated replacing all taxes with a gross receipts tax. The low rate, high revenue thing is a mindkiller.

California’s solution to everything is to increase taxes. Almost every tax increase proposal has passed since I’ve lived here

That is literally not actually true. The two prior proposed tax increases for homelessness in 2016 and 2018 both failed.

Well that’s the “almost” part. Homelessness is a unique issue. Even Gavin Newsom has said that throwing more money at it isn’t the solution and the voters listened

Because it's aimed at tech co's, over $50mm. So you're Uber. Your net profit is $0. But you have an enormous impact on the city. You exacerbate homelessness by driving up costs. Shouldn't you contribute to the solution?

VAT makes the most sense. It's game-able, but better than having this sort of circular taxation logic.

It's the misguided mindset of California politics. They can't grasp that they drive business elsewhere with higher taxes. That they wouldn't need if government would do the right thing and reduce it's size and burden on the citizens and businesses.
