We’re basically at the point where probably 90% of computer users could use an iPad Pro instead of a desktop or laptop. The line between “mobile” and “laptop” is kind of disappearing

I have a wireless keyboard and Dragon Dictate for my iPad which solves 95% of my needs. But is missing photoshop/illustrator/sketch and a decent ide and compiler.

They just announced supposedly desktop class photoshop for the iPad Pro. We’ll see.

Literally just did a deep dive into the iPad ecosystem. In fact, returning the one I bought last week to get the new one. I even code on it, so far.

Is this a different value prop than ChromeOS? Far as I can tell an iPad Pro is functionally just slightly better offline, and ChromeOS doesn't seem to have made a dent apart from in education (~2% market share according to StatCounter)
-
Completely different app ecosystem. I can get photoshop and excel on an iPad. Chrome has their own less powerful version on a chromebook
-
so in your experience iPad Pro app ecosystem actually delivers on the promise of ChromeOS or the cheaper (formerly ARM) Surfaces? that's pretty amazing

Excel is the only thing stopping a mass exodus from laptops ;)

For sure. I’m an accountant - couldn’t possibly do my job as quickly on iPad as I do on a laptop. Keyboard shortcuts and a big screen are crucial for me

I worry about how this wrecks the pipeline for coders/creatives. Imagine a kid growing up with only an ipad vs a kid growing up with a keyboard/mouse setup. Computers and keyboards are still the mainstays of making things and learning to make things.

Yep. And the software limitations can be a real pain. I love sketching and ideation on my iPad Pro but I always have to end up back at my Mac because nothing in realm of Sketch, Figma, XD exists on the iPad.

You’re right that it’s a software problem now and not hardware. I think Apple would blow everyone out of the water with software if they enabled more sustainable business models on the App Store.

Graphics, spreadsheets, coding, and gaming are the four legs holding up the laptop...for now.

Frankly any long Word, or even email, becomes annoying to type on a phone or tablet. And don't even mention revisions or any other semi-advanced features

If someone could build excel for an iPad that is as usable as a desktop/laptop + mouse I would never use anything but an iPad ever again..

Might be worth your time checking out Soulver https://www.acqualia.com/soulver/ios/ its really great for tons of calculations. It can't replace excel but its pretty solid.
