I think through my day to day and I really could do it all on an iPad. I’ll keep a laptop around for those increasingly rare occasions when I write code, but that’s pretty much it

I guess I’ve never used mobile excel much, so some financial modeling could potentially be nasty, but there’s no physical limitations so far as I can tell, just potential software ones

iOS as an Operating system is waaaaay too limiting to ever replace the desktop. That may change but it hasn't in the last half decade.
-
What do you need to do that you can’t do in iOS?
-
Too many things to count, but off the top of my head: Powerful windowing, file system, ability to install 3rd party apps without Apple's permission, the quickness of a keyboard/trackpad

The difference between a laptop and an iPad is the difference between consumer and producer. To really succeed in the new economy, one must aspire to be a producer (and hence taught in schools). Barring exceptions, not much is being produced on tablets.

I tried. I write too much to use a tablet. Keyboards are just better for that, and keyboard+tablet is garbage.

This is an inevitable but regrettable trend. Devices are catering more and more to consumers, but it’s only when you empower creators that the magic happens.

Laptop+tablet fusion already here. I'm on Surface as of last week after almost decade of mac. It's legit for dev (and other stuff).

What if you have a music library?
-
A music library is fast becoming an outdated concept too. People use streaming services now.
-
Apparently so, but I don't.

oh god... not this topic again... let the arguments descend into the usual "but, I can't code" vs "not everybody is in SW development" hell

My dentist designs crowns on a PC, pushes a button and it tells a machine to grind the crown. She takes it out and installs it on my tooth. I haven't seen a mobile version of that system yet.

It's still a long way off doing that. And based on all of the sites that I have access to GA data, consumers are turning away from tablets. This may change that but at that price point I doubt it

Was contemplating this today if my next purchase needs to be a Macbook or would an iPad pro suffice

The battery life on the Pro is terrible. I tried to give up my laptop and couldn’t make it through a half day of meetings. In theory, I agree completely. In practice, I wish we were both right.
