Combo of improving tech + labor shortage. The latter is responsible for so many changes in the workplace the past few years. People wouldn't hire me as a teenager b/c I had long hair; now I see people with radically dyed pink and blue hair all the time!

It’s even weirder that so many corporates hate it, yet distribute projects amongst multiple offices. You basically work remotely yet are not allowed to chose location completely.
-
Everyone knows it's much more efficient to spend 30 minutes+ traveling between offices to have a face to face meeting which goes off topic & starts late due to travel times.
-
And if offices spread over Europe and China its even a multi day travel. These meetings are so outstanding!

I was thinking this recently. It doesn't feel long ago since the only remote companies most people knew were Buffer and Automattic.

Pretty easy to consider when half of your applicants are foreigners that you can't afford to sponsor. That's not the only reason, but we'd love to be able to hire smart people who weren't born here.

We're also doing it and it works amazingly. Our CEO wrote a blog post about how it works for us yesterday:https://blog.agentrisk.com/why-i-love-working-remotely-and-why-your-company-cannot-and-never-will-310288b195a6 …

Are these pre or post product/market fit companies? I’ve heard that it’s a disastrous idea for pre product/market fit startups to go remote from experienced VCs though I’d love for that to change. cc

IMO, experienced VCs are good at pattern matching, which is by definition good for optimizing for what worked well in the past but not good at predicting future fundamental changes like remote work.

As someone who has been working remotely since 2011, it's nice. I used to get incredulous looks and lots of questions, now when I tell people what I do they get it right away and it doesn't baffle them nearly as much.

And yet toxic Silicon Valley VCs still expect you to burn all your runway on SFO NYC living and office expenses

But it's still too difficult to find startup companies that are hiring for remote roles. Many of the remote roles still have location requirements analysis here >>https://bit.ly/2Rdb0Jf
