Why would you say that? In my experience, the GDPR is quite reasonable, but a lot of interpretations aren't. Do you have an example of something which would seem strange/insane to someone who understands computers/internet?

Disclaimer: I actually read (interesting parts of) the law, including lenghty indepth explanations by lawyers, and am technical.

His american company is opening in europe now so probably he is facing some difficulties. Maybe that's why he is shaming GDPR.
-
I know, but if you're not screwing your customers it's not that hard too comply. And I would guess Lambdaschool isn't doing that.
@AustenAllred if you need good legal advice from people who understand computers and internet I'd advise contacting@ictrecht -
Guessing you have NOT tried to start your own startup. If you did, you will realize that, however well intentioned GDPR is (who can argue about protecting customers), it is so bloated and heavy that only existing large players can afford to implement it and not new startups
-
There a lot of FUD about the GDPR, most of it is pretty groundless for companies who are not gathering data about their customers that they don't need to do business. However, most Start Ups are validation machines that tend to gather and centralize too much data.
-
There is no other way to make a successful startup in today's world except with data. That doesn't mean we abuse the data. It's not a this OR that. You can always protect user data. GDPR is dumb regulations created by ignorant regulators with end result of helping big guys only
-
And that conclusion is NOT FUD, it's sadly reality. Google and FB easily afford GDPR and startups (which we can expect to be far more careful with user data) can't

Good work on this tweet, Austen! You might consider making it more widely reusable by abstracting 'GDPR' into a generic {legislation} parameter.

It was intended to be punitive towards the tech giants but ended up turning around and destroying prospects for small businesses instead.

I think somehow Facebook and Google tricked them into writing a law that only really hurts FB/Google competitors

Heh. Have you seen the Zuckerberg Senate testimony? I would wager that probably 95% of legislators and regulators do not really understand technology.

The ambiguity is the absolute killer for startups, especially those that haven’t raised large institutional rounds and can’t pay specialized attorneys
