difference being the timeframe of the programs (hence applied liberal arts vs. trade school) or are you referring to something else?

Time frame and stated purpose. Lambda School exists to help you get a high-paying career as quickly as possible.
-
interesting distinction, hadn’t fully seen it like that until now exciting times ahead with so many options

Austen why do you think no one tried/succeed with Lambda’s model before you? Seems so obvious in retrospect. I don’t see why lambda couldn’t have existed 5+ years ago
-
Risk aversion. The business model for bootcamps wasn't even validated yet, and collecting $ up front was the safest way to proceed. Austin is pursing a more risky business model, but now knows (a) good students will get hired. (b) they can afford to pay back tuition.
-
When you think about it, it's almost but not quite a VC model where
@LambdaSchool curates the Developer ("startup") to fund with 7-month code school (incubator) & Developer pays it pack (at most) a $30K convertible. Bite sizes are monthly cohorts & Lambda Next is the accelerator -
It's not a bad analogy if you consider the market for the product (i.e. student) any single large company in need of extended software consulting services. That you need to convince some single company to make a large investment in each student (hiring) is the key difference.
-
The reason it wouldn't work pre-2013 is that it was much harder to hire ppl with non-traditional backgrounds. Nobody knew if they were any good, and there was no firm data to justify it. Bootcamps set that precedent, so now the data exists.
-
I think the key insight here is the they pre-filter incoming students via the free classes :)
-
You nailed it. That's the key feature which separates this from online classes or pay-up-front boot camps. They have an untapped talent pool (ppl who don't have $10k-$20k) w/ exclusive access. It's the curation which is the main product, not the coursework or network.
