Both me and my cofounder dropped out of BYU after two semesters, so
-
so you check the some college education box. you went to college. didn’t choose to finish that (yet) but got dialed into a powerful community. good stuff! great school.
-
Lol I went there, it was a joke, so I stopped going; you don’t have to sell me on its supposed merits.
-
did you meet your cofounder there?
-

More interestingly do you require a college degree? And if so do you require an official transcript? Do you care what their GPA is?
-
No, no and no
-
Wait. So you actually just care about someone’s skills? Shocking.

Well I get the point about the founder with an innovative idea / solution but with respect to the broader employee base, I believe college and educational background are really important.

I mean isn’t on most of resumes when folks apply, or come up in the interview? Unless it’s a very experienced hire.
-
I’m not saying it’s invisible, I’m saying it’s not very valuable as a signal and I don’t really care about it
-
Not for all companies (esp startups) - but outside of developers, entry-level recruiting is usually campus based, with a very odd outlier now and then. Would be interesting to see the breakdown of where everyone went to school at major tech cos.
-
I know and really like the Lambda mission, but almost every company/HR/CEO says “it doesn’t matter if or where you go to college!” then recruits only at certain schools, majors, etc...they forget to add “I wish” at the front of the statement.

I’ll be honest, I respect this. But it makes me so bitter.
-
Why does it make you bitter?
-
Got sucked into the college machine worked my ass off to get a 3.93 and nobody smart has ever cared

-
If in the college machine, I learned that high school grades mattered more in the long run. High HS GPA->good college->completed degree(didn't matter GPA as long as you get the piece of paper)->Job, hopefully. I had 3.98 HS, 3.2 college GPA. Work for solid startup now, & love it.
