I’ve watched a number of people become influential in Silicon Valley by doing nothing more than reading a lot and tweeting interesting thoughts about what they read. It’s pretty remarkable that the price of admission can be a free app and a library card.

How much richer is the tech discourse thanks to someone like Ben Thompson, whose only valley experience was an MBA internship at Apple. Would also argue that Graham, Dixon, and many other VCs are more influential because of their writing than their startups.
