The First American by H.W. Brands is wonderful; quite newly published "The Young Benjamin Franklin" by Nick Bunker seems to be enjoying positive reviews; and there's always the man's autobiography.
-
Also, certainly get a lot of Franklin in Winik's 1776, but IMHO the best book out there on the founders - a beautifully interwoven series of biographies-- is "Patriots" by A.J. Langguth.

You tried the autobiography yet?

Agreed. Franklin was a wise teacher. ‘Poor Richards’ mirrors ‘Meditations’. ‘13 Virtues’ mirrors Religious Study. ‘The Way to Wealth’ is his Money Guide, and Juntos were his guides to forming Corporations. His lightning experiments were also more advanced than ppl think.
-
The Autobiography has some great learning techniques throughout (how to deal with conflict = allow others to kill themselves, help others for free - ‘adjusting to randomness of creation’ = cut up your own papers, dangers of authorship bias, etc.
-
“How the Nation was Won” by Graham, is good for spy work. Most his pseudonym stuff is spy work to sway mobs (Silence DoGood was an attack on ‘essays to do good’, his friend Cotton Mathers). He would often trumpet ideas of ‘enemies’ & redirect his followers after acquisition.

I’m a fan of the autobiography. He clearly thinks pretty highly of himself, but I’ve found his take on Virtue pretty interesting.

The autobiography, especially parts 1 and 2, has a higher density of practical advice delivered through the narrative of his life than the Isaacson biography. The biography covers everything well, but it's more fun to hear in Franklin's voice.
