1/ People often ask if it's worth it for companies to have an HQ in Silicon Valley. Real estate is crazy expensive here, salaries are astronomical as a result, there's heavy rush hour traffic, and so on. Why do companies put up with this?? One answer: an abundance of top talent.

But is the talent in SF because the the companies are there, or are the companies there because the talent is? That connection isn't clear to me.

Are people on Instagram because Instagram is the best or is Instagram the best because that’s where the people are? The reality is it doesn’t matter. Network effects are powerful

Absolutely true, but being on a social network is not nearly the same as relocating to one of the most expensive cities in the world. I think network effects are powerful, and I want to understand causality.

I agree that SF talent pool is just larger than other cities, but I'm fascinated to understand *why*. If Lambda continues to grow by reputation etc, at some point, the talent pools will grow in other markets, and wouldn't it be neat if that caused more startups in other markets?

To be clear, 85% of our employees are outside the Bay Area, but I see no feasible way to replace the 15% elsewhere

I think the most interesting long-term experiment of remote work is whether some sliver of your 85% can become enough like the 15% to build new startup economies across the US.
