At some level, does it even matter? I doubt e.g. PayPal was successful because they had the “correct” comp structure

It certainly matters on the micro level. But setting the correct comp structure doesn't necessarily help you avoid failure on the macro level.

ya basically. The analogy of Twitter being a clown car driven into a gold mine comes to mind. That doesn't mean you try to suck at little stuff, but net net it probably matters less than the big stuff.
