I'm not saying it's illegal. And you know I'm not saying that. Lots of things I don't like are legal. Lots of things I like are illegal. Do you think the amount of tax Amazon pay in the UK, when viewed with the impact they have on public resources, is fine and should continue?
If not change the laws
If it's legal, it's fine? Even though it's unsustainable and leads to poorer local services? I'm trying to understand where you're coming from with all this, as it's pretty alien. Maybe it's a v American view of the world?
What do you actually expect Amazon to do? Mail a donation to the government? I expect every company to fulfill its duty to shareholders and minimize the taxes it pays, reinvesting the dollars into the business
It's an odd view (to me) that a company operates in this very clean vacuum, with no compassion. Over here it's unusual to support a company which is pathologically selfish. Though, I think that's just how it works in the US? Seems cruel and unsustainable.
The best thing Amazon can do for society is drive down prices, make it easier to move products, and create economic surplus while increasing GDP. That’s a phenomenal benefit that no one appreciates. They should focus on that, not on paying taxes.
I mean... the two aren’t zero sum. Public criticism applying a moral lens to its operations helped create this better outcome for hundreds of thousands of people, and that’s a good thing (not “mailing a check” or some bad decision that drives prices up)
Yeah, exactly. Why can’t both be true at the same time? The fact is Amazon pays ludicrous small taxes in some countries, and I mean low as in unjust society low. AND Amazon also provides a lot of value with their service. Such view holds true in the US just as well as in Europe
