1/ Hm is discord now being positioned against hipchat? I thought slack killed hipchat? Sure ppl are using discord for chat rooms (in addition to voice) but I don’t think those ppl were ever hipchat users to begin with. Almost all of discord’s use case revolves around gaming.
-
2/ imo if discord is to survive and thrive independently (self sustaining vs acquisition), and they are $130M pre rev, their only shot is to disrupt Steam, the monopoly on game sales/game App Store but antequated social gaming experience
-
Discord is more community so I see a better fit with twitch
-
i view twitch as one to many community. it's a platform for streamers to reach an audience. discord is different: it's a platform for ppl to digitally hangout with their friends. (more akin to slack, but slack is that for work not play). most similar to steam imo.
-
Steam community isn’t really a thing - they never really figured it out. I think game district will be taken over by twitch + Amazon, gg steam.
-
Steam community is barely a thing; they definitely missed the bigger opportunity imo. Their revenue is so insane (compared to discord) that if they can actually get some good product ppl in there they may have a chance to salvage a community experience.
-
changing product direction and culture at that point is almost impossible - in the end it's about the monetization stack. Which amazon will disrupt (already starting with launches, game loot, etc)
-
Tbh it’s hard to think of major successful examples of established co’s adapting to something like that. Facebook stories is maybe the best ex? Amazon has a game store? Didn’t realize that. Links to any articles ab it’s rise?

I work a lot with discord related things, and I wouldn't compare to hip chat/chat work/slack. Audience is very different, only similarity is the UI. The majority of discords users are young gamers who never heard of hipchat or slack. Still - they are crazy disruptive though

I think about this a lot. When Compaq mounted a serious challenge to IBM and then Dell showed up, at the time that seemed like it all happened so fast. Now seems glacial in comparison

Slack killed hipchat - discord killed ventrilo, teamspeak and raidcall. Kinda think amazon will buy them

1/2 There is always a defense, its a great offense & someone or a team looking out for the what ifs...also a mgmt staff thats open to listening and adaptation not just blindly driving towards a goal because they think the founder/a board know it all.
-
2/2 I loved challenging/fighting with my boss, we became best friends and the company thrived because of it. Too many founders/board members can't check their ego/resume for the benefit of the company... thus a disruptor is born.

It's a stark contrast, but Slack disrupted Hipchat way prior to to the rise of Discord.
