Peer learning is like learning through play. It works best when structured and supported.

Can you give an example of who's eliminating teachers?

It's not about eliminating teachers and mentors. They are needed and have a place. I think it's about examining their role to be facilitators in self-empowered, independent learning. Youth need to learn how to learn so they aren't too dependent on waiting on instruction.

Maybe Sugata Mitra can share a bit of his view... School in the Cloud is an amazing idea for education! DIY Education

Everyone in the learning environment (which includes learned "elders") should be a peer. Treating everyone as a peer allows them to don the student/teacher hat as appropriate. Static student/teacher labels create a rigid hierarchy. Peer-to-peer creates a dynamic heterarchy.

The evidence we look at in education, at least on a k-12 level, is that it's only effective when it's paired with teacher instruction not on it's own.

I think the best case scenario is described by Victor Wooten - but he himself is a teacher and mentor and probably sought out several along his careerhttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1042994501575311362?s=21 …

Definitely a bad approach ; spend time around people who have already made the mistakes you could make now. Save the time , make new mistakes not old ones.

Some people learn better figuring it out on their own or with another person that doesn’t know. Plus “teacher” is typically less of a hands on experience (not always, typically).

Mentors are contextual. If I need security mentoring I go to one person, if I need dev ops mentoring I go to another etc.
