It's colossally wasteful. The time going through the TSA is low, on average, but the worst case is enough to make you miss your flight unless you arrive hours early. 1.7 million people fly per day. It's not a hard multiplication.

For the lazy, assuming people arrive on average an hour and a half early due to security, the TSA wastes roughly 100,000 man years every year, or ~2 million man years since 2001.
-
It's the equivalent loss of productivity of locking every man, woman, and child in the state of Nebraska in an airport for a year.

I just submit to the extortion and pay the authorities to harass me less (tsa pre + global entry)

-
That still does not help on the arrive two hours before your flight :( . Some short flights airport security / checking time + flight is less than driving or what it be on a private plane.
-
oh yeah. I think travelling point to point (from my house in the bay area to a house in LA) is actually about the same time if I drive or fly due to stupid security FUD. Plus I get to keep my dignity :)

Yeah. People who haven’t flown private think that it’s the private plane part that’s great. That is awesome and all, but the real treat is driving your car up next to a plane, grabbing a latte, then departing. Incredible.

Can’t agree more. TSA is a just a security theater clowning around. A study showed they missed 95% of weapons screened.https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/6/tsa-failed-detect-95-percent-prohibited-items-minn/ …

You’d get along beautifully with my partner who’s been making the same mental math while standing in line at the airport :) lol!

More “life” (in minutes) lost in TSA lines than any terrorist attack... open ended running total.

It’s okay the loss is partially re-captured by TSA Precheck revenue and redirected to TSA salaries

I’ve been thinking about that so much lately. With all the background checks many of us already go thru, standing in line to run our bags thru an X-ray machine is completely wasteful.
