One way you can think of YC is as a union for founders. Not a 100% analogy but it turns the power dynamic back over to founders.https://twitter.com/mwseibel/status/1039369812827230209 …

Investors in YC companies please remember. When you make extremely non-standard complicated requests, waste founder time, don’t follow handshake deals, take forever to wire money, or otherwise screw around with a YC company during fundraising the following happens:

That’s an interesting take given the YC founder’s feelings on unions.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/663456748494127104?s=21 …

Any industry that still has unions has potential energy that could be released by startups.

Particularly in an era when what Big Tech really needs are its own employee unions.

I would say, rather, that YC exemplifies a mechanism for shifting power that is *not* a union. There's no collective bargaining, nor attempt to suppress competitors ("scabs"). There *is* mutual support and information sharing within a defined process.

There's something fairly close to collective bargaining at/around Demo Day, which a lot of the investors you pitch will grouse about. And there's an overt, explicit practice of shunning investors who won't play by YC's rules. 'Scab' companies aren't punished AFAIK though.

I'm familiar with Demo Day. When I say "collective bargaining," I mean literal collective bargaining as governed by the Wagner Act and the NLRB. It's not that; not even close, really.

And I'm totally fine with YC shunning investors at will, as long all parties are participating voluntarily. The lack of coercive suppression of competitors, whether through government or private ("we will break your legs") action, is a key difference.

Of course, @AustenAllred said at the start that the analogy is not perfect, so maybe I'm pressing the difference unnecessarily.

I just thinks it's important to see that there can be many creative, cooperative models that shift the economic position of participants in beneficial ways, and it can obscure things to quickly assimilate these to old, familiar models, e.g., unions.

Until we have unification of labor and capital it will be a lords ands serfs. Where a majority of founders work for a decade to give 90% back to the VCs, on avg making what could have been done in a soul-sucking job.

That’s what struck me too. And honestly this works for any kind of group that knows it can make money. I wonder who will build the “unionize” app!

Founders-first design thinking would be a tad more current analog I think 🤔
