Most people (88%) go to college to get a job. Colleges are convinced that helping you get a job isn’t what they’re there for. What an incredible misalignment when you’re spending tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars.https://twitter.com/educationpalmer/status/1036610432969007106 …

88% of students say they go to college “to get a better job”. Universities have been extremely slow to adapt, resulting in 40% of college graduates being underemployed. What will it take for America’s higher education system to reform? #futureofwork https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2018/09/01/college-students-say-they-want-a-degree-for-a-job-are-they-getting-what-they-want/ …

I made my book club (full of lefty academics) read "The Case Against Education" and they were all *horrified* at the idea that the point of college was to get a better job. "the point of college is to BROADEN YOUR MIND and LEARN YOU HOW TO THINK and so on and so forth!"

A @LambdaSchool for every country should be partly motto of all development agencies like @WorldBank and @ADB_HQ, @DaveEvansPhD @Shanta_WB

Totally agree with the fact of misalignment, but I don't think it's colleges fault. It's pretty unambiguous that getting a job was *not* their original purpose, and some of the best schools in terms of academic rigor are the ones that have resisted that trend most strongly.

What we really need are excellent job-oriented schools *in addition* to excellent academic schools. There's no contradiction in having both! The problem is in conflating the two purposes in a single institution.

It's the same scenario in India too. I had a lot of discussions with few colleges and nobody is really interested in getting students employed. Instead when a student does get a good job, they will show as if their education has helped him which is rarely the case.

I have to disagree. Most people I know went to college NOT to get a job%: at 17 or 18, they didn’t have the foggiest idea what kind of career they’d like or would be talented at, so they postponed the decision by going to college.

University should be focused on getting an education not a job.

Not sure that institutions are convinced that this isn't their role, given that nearly all invest in career services. It's more that they respond to market needs at a glacial pace. (Could be due to: entrenched practices, lack of internal direction/industry partnerships, etc.)

This was less of a problem when college was reasonably affordable. Difficult to make the financial investment required these days without considering the financial ROI.
