That theory makes no sense to me. If you believe it, you have to explain where the money is going. Who exactly in these non-profit colleges is getting rich if they should cost .25x?

Tenure track professors probably make more than they otherwise should given the supply of PhDs who want the job and the extremely limited number of positions.

Look up the numbers. I’d guess most are still underpaid. Obviously in STEM, but even in much of the humanities, you do better in industry. My aunt made bank as a PhD anthropologist, but not teaching.

But does that reflect the cost of teaching students? UC Berkeley 25 years ago was using adjuncts at the same time it was rolling out a new $500M research program and building several new research buildings.

What % of the budget are those things, would that money otherwise exist to trach students (ie is it an external grant?). These are questions that matter when assessing whether these numbers are problems.

I’m personally convinced the solutions here aren’t BS Cato stuff they’ve been pushing for decades & actual innovation. We need to make teachers more productive. Tech and biz model innovation will be key.

I agree. I’m extremely biased but I think Lambda School is doing interesting things and has plenty more in the hopper but there need to be solutions for non stem education as well.
