        America might have walkable cities and a robust public transit network then, more enjoyable cities and possibly lower housing prices. The way the auto lobby completely transformed 99% of American cities into auto oriented traffic jams is kind of sad.

        when cars started being around in the late 1890s in many states they had crazy regulations that basically made them illegal, because they "scared horse carriages"

        even still with 120 years less bureaucracy, red flag laws slowed things considerably, and is considered to be the difference between development in the US vs across the pond

        Cars being forced into prominence by a few people is one of the greatest US tragedies. Led to sprawl and many other issues Read “Happy City” — great overview on this and many other urbanism issues

        Not to say cars are bad, just saddening that most American cities lack the vibrancy of dense walkable cities with rich public transit that you see in Europe + Asia.
