In coming weeks Lambda School will be moving away from interviews entirely, and toward something called, “tryouts.” Students trying out will be taught how to build cool stuff, and the people who do the best at building cool stuff and working with others will be accepted.

“The reason being that the best indicator for being good at x is being good at x.” For some reason it’s really hard for people to grasp this. “Y” keeps sneaking its way into the equation somehow.

This kind of validation is so much better than interview or exams. Those bias heavily towards other skills.

Also a great way to get free dev work on the platform. Kinda like an ante for the new students.

Any concern about the opportunity costs for those who put in the time but don't make it? I am genuinely curious to hear, I think it is an interesting idea.

Also, interviews can be faked. It’s hard to fake ‘group work’ while in a group when you don’t know who to kiss ass to specifically. And talk is cheap. Doers actually win, not could have doners.

I wholeheartedly agree, although, please, be really clear with applicants what and how you are going to assess. Those group assessments (if you're doing them) could feel really unfair. But maybe it's just me having trauma doing those.

We used to case studies where candidates would be given a current challenge & 1 week to present their solution. They could call any of the company staff including the CEO, ask any question and any data they need to solve the challenge. It was a great way to hire new members. 1/2

We evaluated candidates on the kind of questions they asked & how well they communicated & digested data & presented it. It's not perfect but
better than flat interviews.
