The University of Phoenix had more students default on student loans than graduate for several years and is fully accredited All accreditation really guarantees is length of course and that it’s taught by people with degrees. Not necessarily bad things, but doesn’t mean muchhttps://twitter.com/tszzl/status/1033810835330789376 …

Genuine question: Without accreditation how can someone judge the difference between a Phoenix University vs a Lambda School

Speaking as a former Apollo Group (UPhoenix parent company), balancing the demands of growth at all costs for quarterly earnings reports and maintaining standards ... well standards lost frequently.

I once did a financial aid training for the enrollment group and wound up sitting in on the tail end of admissions standards. “We will admit everyone but don’t say that.” I left shortly after that

Fwiw, Liberty University has been accredited for years, despite its resistance to teaching the theory of evolution (plus actively teaching lots of other bonkers stuff)

@tszzl Another diff. is UniPHX made students purchase the most up to date @HMHCo 7th edition of a $239 underwater basket weaving textbook, which is republished every 2 yrs (of course). Accreditation has everything to do with conforming to the norms of the industry, not education

I went to University of Phoenix because no other University would allow me to attend fully remote. I had a variable schedule job that I needed and wanted to get “the degree”. More established schools are allowing fully remote degrees now, but it was unheard of in 2008.

in college I definitely thought some people that went should have failed because they didnt put in the work... but I really like what your saying about that doesnt mean they should be forced into that much debt/pain to try.... interesting

For profit institutions have a different standard to meet for student enrollment, retention, graduation, placement and loan repayment. There are reputable accrediting commissions and one not so reputable. Boy do I have stories to tell about fin aid drama.

It is time for legislative reform in regards to student loans. They are one of the few types of loans that cannot be discharged through bankruptcy. These loans are very often predatory in nature, And terms are subject to unilateral change in the promissory note.

Accreditation in institutions is about acccess to federal student grants and usury / the “network” can be found elsewhere but is generally stronger where the smart people have been cajoled into paying big $$ to a degree then hire other who did the same as cover
