How much do outside influences like US News & other orgs school rankings influence things? It appears to me that while a university may want to go in a certain direction or do drastic things, rankings system incentivize them to not rock the boat and play the rankings game.

way more than it should

For the last year I've been smacked in the face a few times by this. I lost track of the number of times I've asked our customers "do you want it this way because that's how it's always been, or because it should be?"

University administrator here, I'd be curious to hear you elaborate on this thought. Do you think this is an administrative mindset /attitude type thing? Or just fallout from having to manage massive bureaucracies?

Socialism doesn’t work anywhere, you still run into the calculation problem
-
Bureaucracy is not limited to socialist institutions.
-
But it is inherently in all socialist institutions.

@OlinCollege is different. -
So are
@wgu and@SNHU and@WebbInstitute and the military academies and hundreds of community colleges and area technical colleges. Urban work college like Paul Quinn is interesting. -
The Paul Quinn story is a great one. That college president seems stellar. Excited for their expansion.

The attribute most common to university administrators is abject cowardice.

Academic administration is almost entirely populated with former faculty. This is true for the majority of 4 year degree granting institutions. What happens to this desire/drive when they move into administration where, presumably, they could effect change?
-
Selection effects prevent anyone with such desires from achieving those positions. Even if they didn’t, there’s just a dense structure of network layers at the top actively working to prevent any kind of substantive improvement.
